"this is not massage"
Neuromuscular Reeducation is a therapeutic technique combining manual therapy in a direct and aggressive manner with exercise to improve balance, coordination, posture, kinesthetic sense and proprioception. This is not massage. It is beyond deep tissue. It is neither relaxing nor particularly pleasant. It is just very effective in relieving pain. Treatment may include balance exercises such as one-legged standing and the progressive use of floor poses as postural challenges to evaluate stability. As a client you will be asked to feel the changes in your body during the therapy. You will become aware of the reduction in pain and to feel the correct position of joints and perceive the direction of movement of the body extremities. The goal is to break adhesions that bind muscles and entrap nerves and to immediately feel the change that occurs.
The technique emphasizes the connection of the mind to the body. It occurs as you feel your pain levels drop and mobility increase during the course of the session. It is designed to help you to stop the unconscious implementation of compensatory reactions to pain that create unhealthy gait and positioning of the body. It may utilize resistance tubing or training devices to establish efficient motor recruitment patterns.
Neuromuscular Reeducation is not a passive therapy. The clients are required to move their limbs and trunk to lengthen and shorten the targeted muscle during treatment. In order to achieve the desired effect the therapist must create friction along a specific line of drive. It is recommended that the client bring loose fitting shorts to increase their comfort as they will be moving around the studio during these sessions.
